Luis Pedro Zelaya Sr. is supposed to be successfully retired, just hanging out with a few coffee plants to keep him company. He and his kids have done very well in Guatemalan specialty coffee. But Luis Pedro Senior has other ideas.
Buena Vista ranks among the most organized family farms we've ever encountered. From the symmetrical rows of shade trees to the shrubs pruned back at the slightest hint of leaf rust, this is a tight operation. Luis Pedro Senior cares a lot about the little things, and no one's going to stop him. As Sarah Jane said, "It's too perfect."
She said that on her birthday, incidentally, which she spent cupping over either coffees at the Buena Vista cupping lab. Some people don't know how to relax.
Sarah says that one of these Antiguan trips, she's going to skip all the coffee, and just be a tourist. Sure, she will. We don't believe here.
Maybe we'd believe her if she didn't spend her days off work comparing the jasmine bushes above Dolores Park to one of the coffees she roasts. Or if she hadn't already decided to spend her last birthday viewing puffs of smoke from an active volcano through the window of that Antiguan cupping lab.
On the other hand, what's the point of relaxing, when you could be tasting a coffee like this, a coffee that is almost "too perfect?"
